According to a statement released by the Turkish Iron and Steel Producers' Association (DCUD), in 2012 Turkey's finished steel production reached 34.3 million mt, up by 7.3 percent year on year. However, due to the global economic recession, the rate of increase of Turkey's finished steel production was not as strong as the 21.5 percent year-on-year increase recorded in 2011.

25.2 milllion mt of the total finished steel production in 2012 consisted of long steel products, while the flat steel product total amounted to 9 million mt. Turkey's flat steel production decreased 0.4 percent, while domestic production of long steel products rose by 10.4 percent, both compared to 2011.

Meanwhile, Turkey's finished steel product consumption in 2012 exceeded 28.4 million mt, rising 5.6 percent compared to 2011, while the country's flat steel consumption was 13.6 million mt, increasing 3.1 percent, and its long steel consumption reached 14.8 million mt, up 7.9 percent, both compared to the previous year, indicating that activity in the Turkish construction sector in 2012 was stronger compared to the manufacturing sector. Last year, 52.1 percent of the total finished steel consumption consisted of long steel, while 47.9 percent consisted of flat steel.
